WHO IS 5 GYRES?

5 Gyres is a leading non-profit, empowering action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, education, and advocacy.

The science is clear – plastic pollution is a global problem, in oceans, watersheds, and terrestrial environments worldwide.

Take Action. Bring Change

Let’s get plastic out of our environment! Help us raise $250,000 for 5 Gyres.

STAND FOR CHANGE. SUPPORT THE MISSION

“We pursue research that drives impact – science to solutions.”

5 Gyres was founded in 2009 to research gaps in our global understanding of plastic pollution and apply this science to drive solutions. We led sailing expeditions across the 5 subtropical ocean “gyres” and in 2014 published the first global estimate on plastic in the world’s oceans. We published the discovery of plastic microbeads in the Great Lakes, which drove the Microbead Free Waters Act of 2015.

Supporting Scientific Studies

In recent years we’ve watched the policy, public and private sector dialogue shift upstream as we better understand the point sources for plastic pollution. At the same time, there’s an unprecedented surge in innovation and entrepreneurship, and that comes with claims that need validation.  This is where 5 Gyres contributes tremendous added value.

Action = Change

A significant grant of $250,000 would support our science department’s ability to validate and accelerate solutions by giving the public, policymakers and corporate leaders the confidence they need that the solutions we employ are the right choice.

DONATE TODAY

Waste Plastic Roads

Our study of waste plastic amendments to asphalt will investigate whether “plastic roads” across the globe will release harmful micro- and nanoplastics into the environment

Airborne Microfibers

We plan to study airborne microfibers emitted from laundromats to understand how many microfibers are released and how far those synthetic textile fibers travel.
